Are dermal fillers painful? The dermal fillers we use contain lidocaine which is a local anaesthetic. The use of lidocaine with the facial filler injection eases the temporary discomfort and pain some patients feel when they receive facial filler injections. We also apply a topical numbing agent prior to injection to ensure optimal comfort for all patients.
-
How long do dermal fillers last?Typically, most fillers last around 12 months, however recent studies have shown HA fillers lasting over 10 years. Product selection, amount used, patient factors all contribute to longevity factors and each treatment result will vary.
-
Who isn't the right candidate for dermal fillers?HA is not recommended for patients who have: Active facial or oral herpes infection Infection/active acne in the treatment area Current systemic infection Undergoing dental work Uncontrolled diabetes Blood-clotting problems Allergy to any components of injectable hyaluronic acid Patients whom are pregnant or breast-feeding HA should be used with caution in patients who have: Current immunosuppressive therapy If you are unsure if you are a suitable candidate, please book a consultation with one of our nurses to discuss further.
-
What are the risks of dermal fillers?Whilst injection complication is incredibly rare, it is essential that you are aware of the possible risks and side effects of treatments so that you can properly consent to treatment. This is also why it is imperative that you use a medical professional for treatment so that should any adverse event occur, your provider is able to assess, diagnose and treat as required. Full information on all formalities is always discussed at your consultation. Bruising – Probable Swelling/Inflammation - Probable Infection – Unlikely Delayed onset inflammation/granuloma - Unlikely Herpetic outbreak – Patient dependant (always disclose your cold sore history at consultation so that measures can be put in place to prevent herpetic outbreak) Allergic Reaction/Anaphylaxis – Incredibly Rare Vascular Occlusion (blocked artery/vein) – Rare Necrosis – Incredibly Rare Blindness – Extremely Rare

How soon after dissolving can I have treatment? We're able to carry out the chosen dermal filler treatment two weeks post dissolving, as long as all the previous filler has broken down and dissolved. If you feel as though you still have dermal filler in situ after dissolving, please get in touch as we would need to administer further hyalase before adding any more filler.
-
I don't know what treatment I need, what do I do?Many of our patients are unsure on what treatment would be required to address their individual concerns. Many times, patients book in for a procedure which we feel isn’t required, in this case we will recommend an alternate treatment or advise against it all together. We are the experts within this field and pride ourselves on offering nothing but honest, transparent advice and treatment. If you are unsure on what you feel you need or want, please do not worry and leave that to us. Please feel free to book a consultation and we will advise accordingly!
-
I am pregnant/breastfeeding, can I have any treatments? We are unable to treat anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding. There is not significant evidence to support the safety of toxin or dermal filler within pregnancy or lactation and it would be unethical to treat in this instance.
-
Will I bruise?Any time a needle pierces the skin, bruising can occur. Whilst rare with treatments like botox, we can simply never guarantee that you won’t bruise or swell. Please arrange your appointments around any big events and ensure that you have 2 weeks to allow symptoms to subside.
-
How can I prevent bruising and swelling?Avoiding alcohol, aspirin and ibuprofen for 72 hours before any injectable procedure. Avoid strenuous exercise and caffeine on the morning of your appointment. You can also take arnica tablets purchased from any pharmacy or health store for 2 weeks pre procedure to minimise bleeding.
-
Can I go on holiday after my appointment? We advise that for the first 72 hours post treatment, that you do not travel overseas. This is most important for dermal filler treatments. Should a vascular complication arise, you need to be reviewed and treated within a prompt time frame. if you are out of the country and a complication occurs, we are unable to treat or review you in person. We also advise that patients remain out of direct sunlight for the first 48 hours post procedure. Air travel will not impact filler or Botox results, we simply advise against immediate travel should a complication arise.
-
What should I expect at my anti-wrinkle appointment?Your anti-wrinkle treatment will firstly include an in-depth consultation with your Nurse Prescriber, who will assess your face and devise a treatment plan before prescribing Botox if suitable. A full comprehensive medical history will be taken, alongside any information regarding previous aesthetic treatments you have had. Your expectations and desires will be discussed alongside treatment suitability. The procedure itself takes around 15 minutes, and involves skin disinfection & drug preparation. Small injections using microfine needles are made throughout the desired treatment area and full aftercare is given. We always advise a 2 week review post treatment, so that we can assess the effect of your treatment and make minor adjustments if necessary. The dose of toxin administered is documented and stored on your patient file, so that with each additional visit we will be able to ensure we follow your treatment plan and attain positive treatment outcomes.
-
How does anti-wrinkle work?Botulinum Toxin (known as Botox) is a neuromodulator that is injected into targeted treatment areas using an ultra-fine needle. It works by blocking the nerve signals needed for facial muscles to contract. Muscle movement is slowed, and cosmetic improvement then takes shape. Once injected, the neuromodulator relaxes the muscles and decreases their movement, which in turn reduces appearance of lines or wrinkles in the area. Effect starts to kick in anywhere from 3-7 days post injection, with final results being seen 14 days later.
-
Are anti-wrinkle injections painful? The procedure is not considered painful. Most patients report a brief period of discomfort during the injection, which does not persist once the procedure is complete. Numbing agent is not required, needles utilised for toxin procedures are as fine as a hair.
-
How long will my anti-wrinkle treatment last? The results of Botox typically last between 3-4 months from the date of injection depending on the region treated. Over time the body metabolises the Botox, leading to the slow return of muscle movement in the treatment area. Patients can choose to maintain their Botox results for longer periods by undergoing periodic maintenance treatments every 3-4 months.
-
When should I start anti-wrinkle treatment? Some patients may wonder if they are ‘too young’ or ‘too old’ to try Botox. There is no right or wrong age to start using Botox, and we assess by presentation not by age. Patients should always receive a consultation by a medical prescribing professional prior to treatment, whereby suitability for treatment will be assessed accordingly. As a rough guide, we advise that when the fine lines start to etch and remain present on the skin surface whilst your face is AT REST, it’s time to consider treatment if these lines are bothersome. If your lines are very deep set and do not disappear when you stretch the surrounding skin, you may require alternate treatment alongside toxin.
-
What are the risks of anti-wrinkle injections?Whilst this is a very low risk procedure, all risks and possible adverse outcomes are discussed at consultation. Toxin is not permanent, so any undesired side effects wear off after usually 8/12 weeks.
-
Do you offer an anti-wrinkle ‘top up’?The complimentary 2-week review is not compulsory nor essential. This review is not a top up, but an assessment of your treatment outcomes. Toxin doesn’t work immediately, and unlike filler results are not seen for the first 7-10 days. 2 weeks post treatment, if a correctional dose is required it will be administered at this review appointment. If your toxin treatment has taken well, with no asymmetry or irregularity, additional toxin will not be required or administered.

What happens if I book an appointment, but I'm not suitable for the treatment I wanted? Our nurses will always carry out a consultation with you prior to treatment to ensure that you are suitable for the chosen treatment and also to ensure that they will be able to give you the results you are looking for. Sometimes our nurses may suggest alternative treatments but if for any reason you are not suitable for the chosen treatment or do not want alternative treatments, your appointment would then be classed as a consultation. All of our appointment require a non-refundable £50.00 booking fee and usually this is deducted from your treatment total. If you are unable to go ahead with treatment or choose not to, the booking fee paid would be used as a consultation fee, as we charge £50.00 for our consultations. This is non-refundable but can of course be used against an alternative treatment if you choose to book in. The only time we can refund the £50.00 booking/consultation fee is if you are medically exempt, this will be discussed with one of our nurses your appointment.
-
Does my consultation price come off of the cost of my treatment?Consultations with our nurses cost £50.00. If you decide to go ahead with treatment after your consultation, this cost will come off of your total treatment price. The consultation fee is valid to be used against treatments booked within three months after your consultation. Please note, if you decide to not book in a treatment after your consultation, the £50.00 fee is non-refundable and will be used as a consultation fee.
-
Can I reschedule my appointment? You're able to reschedule an appointment if we are given 7 days notice. If you're unable to give 7 days notice, we unfortunately will not be able to reschedule your appointment and your booking fee will be lost. We are however able to move an appointment to a different time on the same day, if your nurse has other available times.

I have booked in for a treatment, but I have decided I want a different treatment carried out. What do I do?If you have booked in for a treatment but have changed your mind on what you would like to have carried out, please give us a call on 01245 200 222 or email us at info@essexcosmetics.co.uk. As all of our treatments require a different amount of time, we may not have space in the diary to extend your appointment for a treatment that takes longer than what you originally booked in for. However, we are usually able to accommodate changes to your appointment but be sure to get in touch to double check. You do not need to get in touch if you have booked in, for example, 0.5ml lip filler but decide you want 0.7ml lip filler. Our nurses will carry out a consultation with you prior to treatment, so you can use this time to discuss the amount of filler you would like to have and our nurses will advise accordingly. This is also the case with anti-wrinkle injections, if you have booked in for 1 area but would like 3 areas, this is not a problem and we can amend the booking on the day.
-
